Kemisola has been an average student of the department of English Language and Literature. She has maintained a steady GPA of 3.4 which is a second class, lower division. Kemisola finally gets to her last year on campus and she’s faced with the ultimate task–her long essay. Kemisola needs an A or at least a B to make a second class, upper division but she is at crossroads. First, there is the issue of which area to choose. Should she write on Language or Literature? If she opts for either, which topic can earn her the desired grade? Will her supervisor find her topic innovative enough? If she eventually gets a nod to her topic, how best will she present her thoughts into a finely woven piece of writing?
Honestly, I have been in this situation before and I can tell you, the fears are valid. As broad as it is long, every final year student is Kemisola. In this brief exposé, I’ll tell you a few things you should consider before writing a project.
1. CHOOSING AN AREA: THE QUESTION OF LANGUAGE OR LITERATURE
Since the department is a conflation of two broad course areas, lecturers are arranged into two blocks and these are: the language block and the literature block. Now, which aspect should you choose? Personally, I prefer Literature topics to language even if I can sufficiently write on both but Literature does it for me because it is where I have a wider range of options. You must not choose an area because the supervisor specialises in that area. Do what will be easier and a little fun for you. Honestly, project is stifling. E dey choke. Don’t compound your problems by going for what you have little interest in.
2. CHOOSING A TOPIC
The choice of a topic is a really difficult one. A taxing task indeed but then, everything rests on the shoulders of this choice. Your topic is what determines your grade, honestly. If you truly want to pick a good topic, take note of the following:
* Your topic must be relevant and current. If you are working on Literature, for example, avoid topics like racism, apartheid or all of those ancient concepts. Also, avoid ancient books unless they haven’t been sufficiently written on. There are more recent issues. For example, you can write on sexuality, the social media, popular culture, current music and socio-economic issues pertaining to this current period. This is what makes your work relevant. Relevance is determined by the currency of the issue. This is the first path to take to get an A in your project.
* Avoid clichés. If you truly want to get a good grade, avoid a topic like themes and style in abdhsnbdbdbdbs book. While it will not stress you, don’t also stress yourself hoping to get an A or even a B. The topic is platitudinous. Even themes and style sef don taya.
* Pick a topic you can get enough materials on. Please, don’t look for topics online that are beyond your reach. Remember everything is not going to be your brain input. You will also reference scholars. If you choose a very esoteric topic, you may be stuck on the way. Your topic must be unique but not excessively strange. This is proudly sponsored by Abeg.
* Make your topic short and simple. Don’t try to be too scholarly. You may end up coming up with a topic that completely differs from your work or what you even intended to write. Do not forget, the smartest can also perform poorly.
* Your topic must be something you’re interested in. Imagine being forced to marry a person you have no interest in. Two days into your marriage, you’re already downloading matchmaking apps. It can be tiring, seriously. Go for something that excites you. If your supervisor thrusts something you don’t like at you, kindly decline. They are not evil. They give you room to talk. However, if it’s something you can fall in love with at first sight, please do. But don’t marry a strange and unexciting person. Again, this is proudly sponsored by Abeg.
3. BE RESPECTFUL TO YOUR SUPERVISORS
They say that when in Rome, one should behave like the Romans. This is not America. This is Nigeria and respect is key here. By all means, don’t make your supervisors hate you. Be respectful. Often, mistake the concept of respect. Let me point out one major form of disrespect you may never have thought about. This is unpunctuality. You must be punctual. Get to the office when they ask you to. Submit your chapter as asked. Don’t be a minute late. Constant excuses will be take as an act of disrespect. Don’t toe that path. You won’t like the outcome.
4. THE INTERNET IS YOUR FRIEND. USE IT
The internet will help a lot. Spend your data on more productive things. Learn. Read enough theses to know how to structure yours. Remember that you speak better when you read better and effective use of language is key here. You must use proper language. Don’t write Simbi is a girl and expect an A. You’re not a magician.
5. DO NOT COPY ANOTHER PERSON’S WORK. YOU’LL BE CAUGHT!
You may be tempted to get a project work from another institution or from old boys or girls. I assure, they’ll catch you. Don’t try it. DON’T.
6. BELIEVE IN YOURSELF; IT IS NOT BEYOND YOU.
Don’t ever think it can’t be done. It can. You can get an A. I assure you.
